🍄 Create a Whimsical Mushroom Cottage Using a Simple Toilet Paper Roll!

Looking for a whimsical, easy craft to brighten your day? Turn an ordinary toilet paper roll into a charming mushroom cottage with a touch of cottagecore magic!

It all started when I found myself holding a cardboard tube, wondering what it could become… and the idea of a cute little mushroom popped into my mind! It's like an enchanted woodland home straight from a storybook.

A whimsical scene with a white pumpkin, mushroom-shaped house with red cap, and orange pumpkin, all on a shelf against a light wall.

This is a perfect quick craft—great for kids, fall décor, or anyone who loves a cozy DIY project. Best of all? It takes just 30 minutes or less!

🛠️ What You’ll Need:

  • 1 Toilet paper roll

  • Scissors ✂️

  • Paint (acrylic works best!)

  • Paintbrushes

  • Optional: white paper or parchment (for glowing windows)

  • Optional: battery-powered tealight

Let’s Make a Mushroom Cottage!

Step 1: Shape the Mushroom

Hand using scissors to cut a brown cardboard tube on a light brown surface. The mood is focused and crafty. No visible text.

Flatten your toilet paper roll slightly and sketch out a mushroom silhouette—rounded top, slim bottom. Carefully cut it out. You can keep it standing by leaving a flat bottom or snipping little slits to make it more stable.

Step 2: Paint Your Mushroom

Hands painting red onto a small cardboard object with a blue-handled brush, on a brown paper background. Neutral setting.

Paint the mushroom cap in your favorite color (classic red with white dots is always a winner!) and the stem a soft beige or white. Let it dry completely before adding details.

Step 3: Add Doors & Windows

Hands painting a small house-shaped paper with a red mushroom roof on brown paper. The house is being detailed with blue and brown paint.

Paint your door and windows! I started by filling the window spaces with white, then outlined them with brown for a cozy, rustic look. Add crossbars, doorknobs, vines—whatever your fairy-tale heart desires.

Step 4: Add Final Details

Hands paint a small cardboard house with a red mushroom cap roof on a brown paper background, using a blue brush.

Give your mushroom cottage character! Add ivy, stepping stones, flower boxes, or even a tiny mailbox! The more personal touches, the more magical it becomes.

Step 5: Show it Off!

Final Thoughts

Enjoy your little mushroom cottage! I hope it brings you joy to make it and see it around your home :)
